Sandwick School Log

The first 3 pictures on this page are a log sculpture we shaped for Sandwick Junior High School. This massive log came ashore on the Island of Mousa and was donated to the school. (So not Shetland grown!) Paparwark was commissioned to shape it into a suitable feature for the school garden.

Probably the biggest singe piece of wood we have worked to date! It's from a pine tree but the exact species is difficult for us to determine.

Shetland Timber

We were fortunate to come across some local grown Shetland timber. I had stored them in the workshop for several years wondering what to make from them. They had developed some splits because they hadn't been converted into planks soon enough. I thought we should have some fun with them and turn them into outdoor seating.

I am also hoping they might encourage Shetlanders to plant trees for the future generations. The largest log in the group is several feet thick and goes to show that in time and in a good location suitable furniture making timber can be grown on the islands. Some of the pieces also had really beautiful burrs growing on them which we will be using on future projects.
